"An Invitation To Remember"

                                                                                 July 24, 2008

I am going home in a couple of weeks. Not to the home where I live right
now. I am going to step back in time and revisit my alma mater, Bacon
Academy. The school will celebrate it's 205th anniversary with an all class
reunion on August 9.
Five years ago I attended the festivities and had a great time connecting
with old friends I hung around with in high school. People came in from
across the country to get together to celebrate a school which had been
good to us in our youth. The best part of the whole evening for me was
talking to some people I never really knew back then.
Reunions are fun. When you open them up to the entire alumni association
you get to meet and talk to people who share a common bond which
reaches beyond time and space. You soon find out that even if we
graduated years apart, we have a special connection.
As we shared memories of walking the halls of one facility or another, or
exchanged stories of our interactions with the same teachers, we found
common ground through our experiences at Bacon Academy. I can't wait
to do it again next month. I hope to see some old friends there and to make
some new friends as well.
It struck me as I filled out my RSVP and put it in the mail today, that our
faith in God does the same thing for us. I have friends who live in Texas,
Pennsylvania, Kansas and Florida. We have had vastly different
experiences growing up across the country. Yet our common love of God
has brought us together to worship, to serve the Lord and to gather in
fellowship.
Several years ago we had a young couple join us for worship. They had
just moved to Norwich from Alabama. They were going through a bit of
culture shock. On Sunday morning they showed up and I'll never forget
what the husband said to me. He said, "We've been up here for almost a
month now. Today, for the first time, we finally felt at home."
The church has been called the family of God. Every week we are invited
to a reunion as we gather for worship.  Our common bond  in Christ
brings us together in a place where we can celebrate our faith with friends
old and new. Consider this your invitation to return to the church of your
choice for wonderful reunion with God and his family.

God bless. See you in Church.  Cal
