Cal's Pastoral Epistles
"Angels of Mercy"

                                                                              June 10, 2008

Once upon a time there was a frightened 8 year old boy who had to have
surgery. The year was 1966. His parents checked him in to the William W.
Backus Hospital and at the end of visiting hours they left him in the care of
the staff.

As I write today, I think of Bill Stanley and his weekly columns. He's right.
Times have changed and sometimes we forget how things used to be.
Today parents stay right with their children from admission to discharge.
Back then the children were left in the care of the nurses. Their physical,
emotional and spiritual well being rested in these ladies.

I know because I was that young boy. I can still remember looking out the
window of the children's ward and looking at the playground below. There
were tears in my eyes. I was frightened but one of the nurses on duty, like
an angel of mercy with her starched white cap, came and sat by my bed
and read to me until I calmed down and fell asleep.

Last Sunday afternoon I was at the 100th Anniversary celebration of the
WW Backus School of Nursing Alumni Association. It was a great day and
I was reminded of the special calling that our nurses have. They are
overworked, underpaid and always second guessed. But they are the angels
that minister to us in our time of greatest need.

Dorothy Miller, the President of the Backus Alumni Association said, "the
simple truth is that people come to the hospital; they are sick; you make
them well; you send them home." What she didn't say is that most nurses
enter the field because they care about people and feel called to make a
difference in the lives of others.

The truth is that all of us, as people of faith, have this calling. We are to be
God's angels ministering to those in our sphere of influence. The Apostle
Paul says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the
name of the Lord."

As teachers, we are called to love and nurture the children. As business
leaders, we are called to serve the public and help them get what they need.
As laborers we are called to commit the work of our hands to God for his
blessing. Whatever you do for work or play, I pray that you will let the
nurses you have known be your inspiration. In doing so you will be God's
blessing to those you meet along life's way. And next time you see a nurse,
tell them thank you for being a blessing.

God bless. See you in Church.  Cal
