Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"Are You Ready To Serve?"
January 15, 2009
I almost fell over when he called my name. I was working the perimeter
trying to give him and the family some room. The crowd was growing by
the minute. Then he called me over and said, "Cal, can you get some bottled
water for my daughters?" How could I refuse the President of the United
States. I was Barak Obama's "gofer" after all.
A few minutes later I was fighting my way back through the crowd with
the water and just as I reached the President... I woke up. What a dream. It
was so vivid and real. The thought of being up close and personal to the
next leader of the free world sent goosebumps down my spine. Just the idea
of serving him was awesome. Then again, that's the stuff that dreams are
made of. It doesn't happen to real people like you and me does it?
The truth is that there is something within most of us that wants to do
something noble. We want to make a difference. I think that is why so
many people's imaginations were captivated by the recent election. The
candidates brought something new to the table and inspired their
constituents. People who never got involved before came out to support,
campaign and vote for their heroes.
As I watched the election unfold I remember thinking that Jesus must have
done the same thing for the people in his day. He came with a message of
hope that was sorely needed. When Jesus entered a town the crowds
followed him in record numbers. Everyone wanted a piece of him. They
wanted to hear him speak and wanted to be a part of his ministry.
Over the years I've wondered what it would be like to get up close and
personal with Jesus. That's when I remember that we don't have to wish
for it. The truth is that you and I have been invited to be a part of his
administration.
Jesus calls on us to be ambassadors to the communities in which we live.
He is all about change. His message is one of transformation. He sends us
out to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and to give sight to the blind. He sends us out carry on his mission which
was to give hope to the oppressed and to proclaim the good news that God
loves us.
Now that is an administration that I want to belong to. God bless Barak
Obama. I pray he will succeed as our President and faithfully serve God and
our country. Meanwhile I will serve the One who knows my name, the One
who calls on each of us to serve in faith and love.
God bless. See you in Church. Cal.
