Fearfully & Wonderfully Made

                                                                                                 November 23, 2006

I sat there in awe as Dr. Herb Lustberg explained how interventional
radiology has changed the course of many medical specialties. He
presented several case studies that demonstrated what is being
accomplished with this new technology. Each case revealed a major
victory without the patient being subjected to invasive medical procedures.
Chemo therapy drugs were targeted to specific areas to attack cancer cells
head on for a patient with an inoperable cancerous tumor. The blood flow
was shut off to a fibroid tumor in order to shrink it and give the patient
relief and a new lease on life.

You could have heard a pin drop as we sat there at the Annual Meeting of
the W. W. Backus Hospital Board of Corporators. A verse from Psalm 139
came to mind. "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in
my mother's womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully
made." The human body is a wonder. So many systems working together
to form a whole that lives, breathes, thinks, feels and loves. Most of the
time we never pause to think about the miracle of life.

The last time I really thought about this was the day my youngest daughter
was born. I can still remember the unbelievable joy at seeing her face for
the first time. For nine months we had been living with a promise. We
followed her progress along the way by reading books and hearing
doctor's reports about her status. We learned all about prenatal
development, when the heart and lungs were formed, and how the embryo
grew exponentially over time. But it was all theory and head stuff until the
day she was born. Then flesh and blood became a real person with a
personality and an independent spirit. She became my Rachel.

Life is a precious gift. I thank God for people like Dr. Lustberg and others
who have dedicated their lives to learning all about the human body and the
way it works. In essence they walk hand in hand with God to insure that
this miracle of life continues to function as well as it can. God has revealed
his wisdom to them and they use it every day in an attempt to help us
maintain a quality of life that will allow us to glorify God.

When was the last time you said thank you to God for your doctor? Have
you stopped to give thanks for the nurse who cared for you during your
hospital stay or the pharmacist who filled your prescription at the drug
store? If you visited a physical therapist or waited to see a doctor at the
walk in clinic, did you leave thanking God for the care you received?

The truth is that these men and women often bless us in ways we will
never fully understand. For they treat that part of us that only God sees
and knows. And now through the newest technology that God has
revealed to them, they can do it even better.  Praise God! And next time
you visit your doctor's office or happen to be at the hospital, tell them you
think of them in your prayers and thank them too! For they are a gift from
God.

God bless.  See you in church.  Cal
