Cal's Pastoral Epistles
"Following God Is Child's Play"

                                                                                    July 22, 2009

A few weeks ago I came home with a gigantic box of Kellogg's Corn
Flakes. It was the biggest size the store sells. As I was unpacking the
groceries and putting them away my wife, Lori, came into the kitchen. She
made a quick survey of the packages and stopped when she spotted the
Corn Flakes. She turned to me and said, "Why did you buy that?"
Now I am a strong proponent of the don't ask, don't tell rule, especially
when it comes to grocery shopping. I was hoping she wouldn't ask me that
question so I wouldn't have to answer it. I could have made something up,
but my resistance to her inquiries would have been futile. She would have
locked her sensors onto me and found out anyway.
Sheepishly, I told her that it was a Star Trek collectible box with an offer
for an official Star Trek uniform shirt on the back. Her response was logical
and predictable. She said, "What are you... 10 years old?" Thankfully she
didn't really expect an answer.
What can I say? That childish excitement grabs hold of me every once in a
while. There is nothing wrong with it. Actually I've been told it is good for
the soul. It keeps us from getting stuffy and boring as we get older.
The truth is that if we take ourselves too seriously we run the risk of
losing out on the blessings that God wants to share with us. Jesus knew
this. That's why he said that if we wanted to see his kingdom, we needed to
be more like a child. He called us to see the world with new eyes. He
encouraged us to get rid of all our preconceived notions and trust God at his
word.
The message of the Gospel isn't as complicated as we adults try to make
it. We have all kinds of rules. Jesus broke down the commandments into
two simple phrases. He said "love God with all you got and love your
neighbor." I've watched the kids at church and they get it. They love God.
They enjoy life. What can be better than that?
It may not be logical but it is God's way. If you want to live long and
prosper then let your inner child come out and let Jesus show you the way.
God bless. See you in church. Cal
