 God's "Who's Who?"

                                                                            September 9, 2009

The line-up card read like a "Who's Who." Mayor Rudy Giuliani, General
Colin Powell, former First Lady Laura Bush, Hall of Fame Quarterback Joe
Montana, Inspirational speaker Zig Ziglar and business mogul Steve Forbes
were on tap to speak to the 20,000 people who gathered at the XL Center in
Hartford this week. Guess who was lucky enough to score a ticket?
Anyone who knows me understands that I am a fool when it comes to
getting up close to celebrities. I make Lucy in the old "I Love Lucy" shows
look like a pedestrian. The opportunity to be in the same room with Laura
Bush and Colin Powell was too good to pass up. So I was there this week
and in seventh heaven.
One after another these celebrities took the stage and shared their stories.
Joe Montana talked about the lessons he learned from his dad. Laura Bush
talked about September 11th and how she learned to live in the moment.
Steve Forbes spoke about how he learned to make the most out of
opportunities. Zig Ziglar shared that when you put family first, success and
happiness will follow.
Their stories were not remarkable in themselves. Yet the fact that each of
them had learned something from the circumstances of their lives and was
now sharing it was a powerful testimony. It spoke to what was possible in
life.
It reminded me of so many of the stories we see in the pages of scripture.
In there you find Moses, a boy born into slavery, that rises up to become
the great deliverer. You find Esther, a girl raised in poverty, who saves her
people and becomes the Queen. You find David, a shepherd boy, whose
faith helped him stand up to a giant and ultimately led him to the throne.
The whole day came together when Tamara Lowe, the sponsor of the
seminar, shared her story. She told us how God had changed her life. Her
past could not hold her back when God had her future. That is the good
news that the Bible shares. We have a future with God. All we need to do is
step up and claim it. You don't need Rudy Giuliani to tell you that. God
already has time and again. You and I are members of "God's who's who."
So let's celebrate God's gift and share the good news with all we meet.
God Bless. See you in church. Cal
