Cal's Pastoral Epistles
Let God Help
August 10, 2005
Dear friends,
I had to chuckle when I saw them. The little boy was trying to
tie his shoe. His dad kept trying to reach around him to
help. Every time the father's hand got close, the little boy
would push it away and say, "I can do it myself." I love to sit
and watch people when I go to the mall. You can learn a lot
about human nature by becoming an observer.
As the boy continued to struggle, the dad stepped back and
let the child tackle it on his own. I have to give that father a
lot of credit. He had a lot more patience than I have. The boy
must have played with that lace for ten solid minutes. Each
time he would get closer and closer to making the final loop.
Every time something went wrong and the whole thing
unraveled. He was persistent. He bent down even closer
and pulled at the lace a little harder. That boy gave it
everything he had. Then rather abruptly he looked up at his
father and with a bit of frustration in his voice he said, "You
do it!"
Without a word, the father bent down and tied the shoe and
helped his boy up. "You almost got it. You will get it all by
yourself next time," he said. Then they walked away and I
was left to think about what I had just seen.
Many of us have a tendency to do a lot for our children. We
don't want them to experience the difficulties of life. We
walk ahead of them clearing obstacles and trying to make
the way as smooth as possible. The problem is that our
children want to do things for themselves. They want to
experience life and all it has to offer. They want to do it
themselves. Things do not change much from generation to
generation. I know nobody could tell me how to do anything
when I was younger and I've got the lumps to prove it.
Watching that father and son the other day made me think
about our Heavenly Father and the way He interacts with us.
We are stubborn like that little boy. We think we can do it
ourselves and often push God away. We have an
independent streak in us that says, "I can do it myself." Too
often we only look for God's help when we stumble and trip
over our shoelaces.
Praise God! Our Heavenly Father is a lot like that dad I saw
in the mall. He is always right there and ready to help when
we need Him. He gives us room to try things on our own but
when we call on Him, God simply reaches out, encourages
us and lifts us up.
Have you been trying a little too hard to do it yourself lately?
Then look up to God and ask Him for help. He will gladly
give you the assistance you need and then stick around to
walk with you as you make your way.
God bless! See you in Church. Cal
