Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"Let Your Faith Show"
February 10, 2010
It was a no brainer. I had to be there when I heard the announcement that
the Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers Baseball team was coming to
Norwich. It was the answer to a life long prayer.
I've been a Detroit Tiger fan since I was thirteen years old. I fell in love
with their logo when I started collecting baseball cards. The roaring Tiger.
Before long I got to know all the players. I memorized their stats. Mickey
Lolich, their 25 game winner, was my hero. It didn't hurt that he was on the
chubby side, like me.
Fast forward thirty eight years and there I was sitting in my seat at City
Hall waiting for the press conference to begin. I was wearing my Detroit
warm-up jacket and my favorite Tiger cap. It was bright orange. I was
there to welcome the Connecticut Tigers to my hometown.
Before it was over I ended up getting my fifteen minutes of fame. The
news crews from Channel 30, Channel 8 and the Norwich Bulletin zeroed in
on me after the press conference and asked for interviews. I was happy to
oblige.
Later that day a friend of mine asked, "What did you expect when you
showed up wearing that outfit?" I hadn't even thought about it. I was just
being my normal, enthusiastic, sports fan, self and it showed.
It struck me afterwards that people notice and start asking questions
whenever we are passionate about something. That's especially true when it
comes to our faith.
When we begin doing things just because they are right, people notice.
When we reach out with kindness and love, people notice. When we put
into practice the things we learn at church or at synagogue, our way of life
stands out.
When people start asking questions it gives us the platform to share our
stories. Baseball is one thing. Telling the world about a God whose love
transformed our lives and compels us to serve others is another.
Don't be afraid to be God's biggest fan and let the world know that you
love and serve Him. You just never know when the cameras will be rolling
and your story may inspire someone else to live their faith too.
God bless. See you in church. Cal
