Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"Light In The Darkness"
December 15, 2010
I felt helpless as I watched them leave. Chelsey and her mom, Belinda,
were heading out the door with the EMT's. A trip to the emergency room is
scary enough at home but it takes on an added degree of fear when you are
in as foreign country and no one speaks the language.
They checked her vital signs. One technician spoke a bit of broken
English. He told us they had called the ambulance. The next thing we knew
they were whisking her away and I was saying good bye. I bowed my head
and asked God to help them find their way home.
We were in the Erdgas Arena in Riesa, Germany and the competition was
ending for the night. Our hotel was 30 minutes away. The buses at the
arena were scheduled to leave in a few minutes. The last one would be long
gone by the time they had been attended to. I had no idea how Belinda and
her daughter were going to get home.
I thought of Macaulay Culkin. Do you remember him from the movie
Home Alone? He was cut off from his family and had to fend for himself. It
turned into quite an adventure. I had no idea what the ladies would find, but
I kept seeing them lost and alone with no one to turn to.
Belinda didn't have a phone. We didn't know the name of the hospital. I
wasn't sure how we could help her. Then one member of our group
decided to take things into her own hands. Sandie found out the name of the
hospital, made a call and was able to speak to Belinda.
Sandie stepped in and provided a ray of hope in the cold winter night. A
few hours later Belinda and Chelsey made it back to our hotel by taxi and
Sandie was there to meet them.
It is Christmas time and I was reminded that this is exactly what
happened in Bethlehem. God saw a world that was lost and alone. He
stepped in and took things in his own hands. The Apostle John writes of
God that "He became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory."
Today Christ is with us whenever we are lost and alone and he provides a
way through the dark and scary moments of life. Sometimes he does it in
miraculous way. Other times he does it through someone like you or me or
Sandie who is willing to reach out and be a friend. So be a friend this
Christmas and let God's light shine through you.
God bless! See you in church. Cal
