"Plugged In To God"
December 29, 2010
A few years ago I picked up a small, electric snow blower at a yard sale.
It was in mint condition. It was still in the box with all the original
paperwork. I've used it three years now and absolutely love it. I actually
have fun clearing the snow with it.
This past weekend I went to the shed and pulled it out in anticipation of
the upcoming storm. I grabbed two long extension cords that were sitting
there and I was ready for the snow.
On Monday morning I got up and went outside at 7:00 a.m.. I plugged the
extension cord into the outlet and went to hook it up to my machine. It was
only then that I noticed the problem. My cord had a rectangular casing
around the plug and the snow blower had a round casing at it's end. You
can't put a square peg into a round hole.
I looked at the second cord that lay there on the front porch. I couldn't
believe it. It had a rectangular covering as well. It was then that I
remembered that the cord I had used for the last two years had frayed at
the end and I threw it away. These two cords were new. I had never
thought to check to see if they would work.
I wasn't going to give up that easy. I went in the house to see if I could
find another extension cord. I came back out three times and nothing could
meet my need. Needless to say, I ended up shoveling the sidewalk the old
fashioned way, with grit and determination.
As I shoveled my way down the walk, it struck me that quite often the
things we do don't really fit with what we want out of life. We end up
trying to force things. We fill our lives with activities that are neither
fulfilling or helpful. It is like we try to make square pegs fit into round
holes. All it does is make life harder.
St. Augustine said, "Our hearts are restless until they find rest in thee..."
In other words, we were made to be connected to God. You can't find that
same joy with drugs or sex or power or money. They may work for a
season but they can't give you lasting peace. Only God can do that.
My hope for you, as we begin a new year, is that you will get plugged
into God. Come to church and worship Him. Spend a few minutes each day
reading a few verses of scripture and saying a prayer. Meet with a friend
and talk about spiritual things. You will find that you have more energy and
that the prospects for a happy new year will rise exponentially.
God bless! See you in church. Cal
