"Praying For God's Medical Team"

                                                                                   May 13, 2009

The woman's voice was rising above the chanting of her friends and I
heard her say, "In the name of Jesus, I speak against these doctors who are
non-believers. Lord, you are the great physician. I call on you to stand
against them and bring my brother out of this danger..."
Now I am embarrassed to say that I was eavesdropping on their
conversation with the doctors a few minutes before, as well as their
impromptu prayer meeting. The truth is that I couldn't help it because they
were very loud and you could see that the situation they were dealing with
was very serious.
I had spent a good part of the afternoon in the family waiting room of the
Critical Care floor at the Yale New Haven Hospital. I saw lots of people
come and go. They all had that same sense of worry and dread on their
faces as they waited for news on the status of their loved ones. As I sat
waiting for news on my brother-in-law, I too, did a lot of praying. As
opposed to the family across the room, I was praying for the doctors and
nurses working with my family.
I don't know about you, but I look at the physicians and nurses as partners
in God's healing ministry. I'll never forget the day that I had my angioplasty.
As the doctors were getting ready to begin, I asked them if they minded if I
prayed. I think I took them by surprise. I simply asked God to be in the
room and to guide them in their work.
I believe that God has given us incredible knowledge about the inner
workings of the human body. Just hang around any hospital for a while and
you will experience the depth of wisdom that is on display through the
technology and procedures that are used to affect healing.
I'll never forget the words of a Christian doctor I heard speak several years
ago. He said, "People thank me for making them well. I tell them to thank
God. The human body is a miracle with an incredible capacity to heal itself.
All I do is use what God has given me to set things in motion again." That's
my kind of doctor.
Not every doctor believes this. The good news is that even if they don't
believe in God, God still uses them. The Bible is full of illustrations showing
how God used people with little or no faith to achieve his purposes. He used
kings, slaves, prostitutes, robbers and even a donkey!
So when I am looking for a modern medical miracle I ask him to lead me
to the best physician. Then I pray that God will use him or her to set the
healing in motion. We aren't on opposite sides of the field. We are all on
God's team. So pray for the physicians, nurses and medical personnel you
know. They are God's servants sent to care for us in our time of need. In
and through them, miracles happen every day. So praise God for his
wonderful team.
God Bless! See you in Church. Cal
