"Speck Proofing Our Lives"

                                                                               August 11, 2010

It was only a speck but I was in so much pain that I knocked over a table
and broke a glass. Talk about a bull in a china shop. I couldn't help myself.
I got mad when it happened because I should have known better. I thought
it would never happen to me.
It all started on a hot and steamy Wednesday night. I went out to do some
yard work. I mowed the lawn and then grabbed the weed wacker. I was
sweating. My glasses were steaming up. I took them off. A few minutes
later something hit me in the eye.
It was late so I went to bed and tried to forget about it. The next day I
could feel something wasn't right. Like most men, I tried to deny it or wish
it away. My wife suggested I go to the eye doctor but I was afraid he
would give me bad news. So I put it off.
After stumbling around and knocking over a few things I finally realized
that I couldn't go on. So on Friday morning I went to the eye doctor. After
a quick exam he told me that he saw a tiny speck in my eye and that he was
going to remove it.. I couldn't thank God enough for sending me to this
man.
A speck can wreak so much havoc. Like sin, it can disrupt our lives and
bring us down to our knees. The truth is that we need help when we are
overcome by the flying debris that life throws at us. Jesus knew that and
was often seen reaching out to the down and out with words of
forgiveness, hope and encouragement. Then he gave that mission to his
disciples. He sent them out to heal, forgive and share the good news.
It sounds good but to follow Jesus' example we need to remember one
thing. The apostle Paul said, "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of
God." I think that's why Jesus warns us as his disciples to check our own
failings before we try to help others. Many of us are carrying around log
size problems that get in the way of what we want to do.
The truth is that it is easier to point to someone else's flaws and condemn
them than it is to face with our own problems. Jesus reminds us that we
need to look in, before we look out. I can tell you from personal experience
that there is nothing worse than the blind leading the blind. Lives, hearts and
all kinds of things get broken when we wander around in the dark.
So get down on your knees and let Jesus wash away your speck so you
can get out there to bless others as Jesus would have you do.
God Bless! See you in church.  Cal
