Our Sports Ministries at First Baptist Church
In some circles we have become known as the "Sports Church" because we
have been actively engaged in sports ministries since 1987. Each one began as
an idea from one of our members who wanted to use their love of sports as a
way to reach out to friends and neighbors in the community. Over the years
these ministries have grown and been a blessing to our whole church family.
We have also had the joy of playing side by side with many wonderful people
and ministering to their needs along the way.
Softball
We began by putting together a softball team in the Church League. Mark
Damien and the Pastor went to work rounding up everyone they could find. It
grew from there and the team even managed to win a few championships
over the years.
Bowling
In 1992, one of our members, Paul Lorraine, suggested trying to form a
bowling league from the churches across the city. We sent out letters and
only a few outside the church seemed interested. But before the dust settled
we had enough for six teams from our own congregation. The league has
continued to grow and offer fun and fellowship for many in our congregation
on Sunday nights each summer since.
Basketball
In the winter of 1996-97, Cliff Vanase suggested an outreach ministry to
children using the Church basketball league. He began recruiting and before
long we had two teams. Over the years we have had as many four teams in a
season and lots of children who have been blessed by being part of this
ministry.
Golf
In the spring of 2003 Fred Green put together a Golf Tournament to raise
money for the sound system at church. We followed that up with a second
tournament in 2004 to raise money for the Senior high trip to Colorado. It has
been so much fun for the golfers that we are considering making it a regular
part of our sports ministry schedule.
