Sunday School
Celebrates Rally Day
Our Sunday School opened
on Sunday, September 9 and it
marked the beginning of another
year of hope and promise.
George Rezendes led our
opening exercises and then
Pastor Lord moved the group
outside for the annual picture.
Classes began that day for all
ages. Rosie Main will be
nurturing our toddlers and
pre-schoolers. She will be
assisted
by Sandra Lucien. Fran Rogers, Rachelle Weimer and Zelda Earle are working with our K - 2
class. Doris Calkins and Laura Kreger will be teaching our 3rd - 5th graders. Pastor Cal Lord
and Kristen Deptulski are working with our middle school class. Brian Goldin and the Pastor
will be team teaching the Senior High class and Curt Brockway leads the adult in Bible study.
Everyone was there to kick off the year and
Lori Lord and Cynthia Strouse will be teaching the kids some fun new songs. If you missed
the first few Sundays, don't let that stop you from jumping on board. It is going to be a great
year at the FBC Sunday School.
It Was A Hall of Fame Day
For the last twenty two years we have been celebrating our sports ministries every
summer. It began with our softball team in 1987 and continued with our bowling
league, basketball teams and even a few of our golfers. Dr. Lowell Fewster, our
former ABCCONN Executive Minister, referred to us as the “sports church” and we
have gladly embraced that distinction.
On Sunday, August 19 we invited those who played softball with us in the 1980’s
to join us and be recognized as pioneers of this special ministry. Nine of them were
present including Dave Royce who perfected the “tomahawk chop” to hit the sky
balls in our unlimited arc. Adele DiBiagio Cofer played first base in our inaugural
season and was the first of several women who played with us over the years. Bruce
Royce played third base for four seasons with us before he gave up the bat for a golf
club.
Mark Damien, who was the driving force behind the formation of the team, called
to express his regrets. He was leaving for business in London. Bobby Duntz, our six
time MVP and a member of the inaugural class of our FBC Sports Ministry Hall of
Famers sent along his greetings. The pastor reminisced on how one of our older
members, Donald Lillibridge, caught up with him and signed up two of his
grandsons to play. Eric and Corey Poore formed the left side of our infield for the
first five years. They were joined by their younger brother, David, in 1989. Their
grandfather was their number one fan.
We have had over 135 people play for us since 1987. George Rezendes has played
the most games (291) and 5 new players, Craig Chapman, Jeffrey Goldin, Ray
Henry, Rich Morgan & Chris Vaillancourt joined us this season.
During the service we recognized this year's team and handed out a few awards.
Armin Harris was named this year's MVP. Armin’s play was one of the bright spots
in a long and difficult season. He led the team in hits (29), runs scored (26), doubles
(8), triples (5), RBI (23) and times on base (37). He finished with a .509 average
and an on base percentage of .597.
Craig Chapman was named our Rookie of the Year and Chris Adams as our Most
Improved Player. Other awards included naming George Rezendes as the 11th Player
and Casey Rezendes our Gold Glove player. Dan Dutrumble walked away with the
batting award after finishing with a .679 batting mark.
We then recognized our Bowlers from the Holy Roller League. Gary Arzamarksi
and April Phillips were on hand to accept the Golden Pin for the League
Championship. We also noted all the top scores from the past season.
The final recognition took place as Bill Discordia and Sharon Fishkin were
inducted into our sport Ministry Hall of fame.
Armin Harris was the MVP of the 2007
Softball Season
Sharon Fishkin bowled her way into the
FBC Sports Hall of Fame
Saying Thank You To Our Sunday School Staff
Fred Stone cooked up quite a breakfast feast for our Sunday School teachers and staff
members on Sunday, August 19. There were about twenty five in attendance for the eggs,
bacon, sausage, home fries and breads. It was so good that someone suggested Fred do this
every week during the year. He was flattered but he passed on the thought.
Sunday School Superintendent Sandy Stone and the Pastor thanked the teachers for the
dedication and commended them on their work with the children.
