"Unleashing The Power Of God"
June 23, 2010
I believe in the power of facebook. It is changing the world. People are
coming together to let their desires be known. The powers that be cannot
ignore the tide of emotion and good will that has been unleashed through
this social network.
Betty White's appearance on Saturday Night Live is a case in point. Fresh
off the buzz from a very funny television commercial aired during the Super
Bowl, someone posted that they'd like to see Betty host the popular late
night comedy hour. A fan page was set up and almost overnight a thousand
people had expressed their desire to see this happen. The response was so
overwhelming that NBC took notice and Betty got the call. The fans were
not disappointed as she delighted the audience with her charm and quick wit.
A similar thing happened right here in Norwich. Shortly after the
Connecticut Tigers announced they were moving to town, a group of folks
started a campaign on facebook to get Cal Lord to throw out the first pitch.
It didn't get the gaudy numbers that Betty White did but the fan page
garnered a hundred and thirty one fans. Guess what? The Tigers noticed
and I got the call.
This Sunday afternoon I will be doing my best impression of Betty White
and hoping to throw the ball to home plate in less than two bounces. All
kidding aside, this will be one of the biggest thrills of my life. I am so
excited. I've always loved the Detroit Tigers. To be a part of the festivities
on their opening weekend is a dream come true. I know it isn't the big boys,
but these young men are living their dreams. Some of them will wear the
old English "D" one day. But today they are my Connecticut Tigers.
Dreams come true and prayers are answered when people come together
with one mind. We saw that last year when people joined hand in hand
across the nation to elect our first African American President. The vision
and prayers of Martin Luther King Jr. were answered in that moment. The
truth is that there is power in numbers. When we get together to do
something we can make history.
I began this column by saying I believe in facebook. That's true but I have
news for you. There is a tool that is ten times more powerful and far more
effective in making dreams come true. It is a gift from one who knows and
loves us. There is power in prayer especially when people come together
with one heart and mind. When a hundred people pray for the healing of a
sick friend, God takes notice. When a thousand people bang on the gates of
heaven with a request, God hears that prayer.
I always tell people to pray and to tell God what you hope for. The
scriptures tell us that God cares and that He will always answer our
prayers. The answer may not come exactly as we envisioned, but God is
faithful and true and he will come though in a way that brings blessing to all
concerned. I like facebook but on Sunday afternoon I will be giving thanks
to God for the answered prayer. For He is the one who really has the power
to make things happen in our lives.
God bless. See you in church. Cal
