Cal's Pastoral Epistles

"Working For The Lord"
October 14, 2009
You never know when the call will come. One minute you can simply be
doing your job and the next minute the eyes of the world will be on you.
That happened to Sully on January 15, 2009. Captain Chelsey B. (Sully)
Sullenberger III has a new book out and he’s making the rounds on the
morning talk shows. He shares quite a few insights on life in the book. One
of the hosts read a passage from it that made me stop and think.
Sully says, “I flew hundreds of missions successfully but now I am being
judged on this one. We never know which moment we will be judged on in
life. It is a reminder that no matter what we are doing, we should always
give it our best. You never know when the world will be watching.”
Sully talks about his early life and the values his parents instilled in him in
the book. He shares his achievements in college, in the military and notes
the hard work and preparation that went into building a successful career.
So it is no surprise that on that fateful day when he became a hero he told
the media he was just doing his job.
I was struck by the truth of this thought. The Boy Scout motto, “Be
Prepared” came to mind. The truth is that our faith calls on us to do the
same thing. We are called to live in such a way that our lives will glorify
God. That means that whatever we are doing at any given time has to be
done with excellence. We have to give it our best.
Last Fall I traveled to Sydney Australia. I decided to visit the Hillsong
Church while I was there. This is one of the places where the
contemporary worship movement was born. I arrived at the church and
ducked into the rest room before service. As I walked through the door I
was greeted by a man with a toilet brush who was smiling and singing as he
rinsed the urinals. I smiled back at him and made a comment about his good
humor. He replied, “I’m happy because I’m cleaning for the Lord!”
Of all the things that we aspire to, I can’t remember one person ever
saying that they wanted to clean toilets for the Lord. Yet this man had the
right attitude. The Apostle Paul writes in his letter to the Corinthians, “So
whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of
God.” The truth is that when we offer our work to the Lord, it becomes
holy work. It is transformed from the mundane into an act of worship.
That’s how God is glorified.
I didn’t read Sully’s book so I don’t know anything about his faith. But if
you add faith to his example you will get a good picture of the way God
calls all of us to live life. Be prepared. Offer your work to God. Do your
best. You never know when the eyes of the world will focus on you. But
people will be watching and they will see your example and give glory to
God.
God Bless, See you in church? Cal.
